Federal Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said Berlin supports the idea of Russia and China to address tensions in North Korea in a peaceful manner.
BERLIN (Sputnik) – Federal Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel on Wednesday called for a new relaxation in the face of tensions in North Korea and the need to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
"We should find new ways (to combat proliferation) and work with Russia and China. There are only three countries (in the world) that could effectively contribute to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, namely Russia, China and the United States. Therefore I call. A new window (with options) has opened and we should use it, "Gabriel told the Nordwest-Zeitung.
The official added that he was concerned that new countries could follow North Korea's path and start developing nuclear weapons.
Chancellor Angela Merkel has repeatedly warned of an escalation on the Korean peninsula while US President Donald Trump spoke to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un earlier this month. During her recent telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Merkel confirmed that the crisis on the Korean peninsula can only be resolved through negotiations. It also called for talks to be resumed between all parties involved in the conflict.
On Monday, the UN Security Council unanimously passed its toughest resolution against North Korea on its recent nuclear test and repeated rocket launches. Resolution 2375 restricts, among other things, oil exports to Pyongyang, prohibits the import of textile products from the Asian nation and the country's access to gas liquids.
