The White House is considering a major overhaul of disease control and prevention centers, according to a report that the Trump administration is trying to blame the agency for the botched US response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The CDC is undergoing a performance review, several senior political officials told Politico. The test would likely reveal several errors, such as the inability to perform job tests in the early months of the pandemic.

White House officials have spoken about narrowing the CDC's mission or adding political candidates, Politico said.

According to Politico, the goal, according to Politico, was to make the agency "more agile" and "more reactive".

In recent months, President Donald Trump has tried to distract criticism of his response to the outbreak and could be looking for a company to blame beyond China.

Trump's relationship with the CDC has been controversial since the outbreak began. He initially rejected alarms from agency officials.

In May, Trump ignored the guidelines released by the CDC on how to safely reopen companies.

Top politicians, including former Vice President Joe Biden, the alleged Democratic presidential candidate for 2020, criticized Trump's handling of the crisis.

The White House declined to comment on the Politico report, and the CDC and the Ministry of Health and Human Services did not immediately return CNBC requests for comment.

The CDC has long been recognized as a world-class health agency, but the pandemic has intensified control over its operations.

The outbreak has spread to dozens of countries, with more than 9.1 million confirmed cases worldwide and over 472,541 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. The United States had at least 2.3 million cases and 120,402 deaths, according to the latest information.
