Quoting new swing state polls and bad news one day at a time, Rachel Maddow said on Thursday evening that Donald Trump appeared to be circling the drain of American history.
The MSNBC host pointed out that coronavirus cases are picking up again, millions of Americans are still unemployed and a series of investigations hover like a series of dark clouds over Trump and his family – all at a time when Trump is re-elected aspires to.
"In our country, things are terrible right now, about the pandemic, the economy, our political norms and the disillusionment with courtesy and everything else," Maddow said. "It's just one bad day at a time when you're the president now."
"Now when you're the incumbent President of the United States and you think about all of the structural things that predict whether or not presidents will be re-elected … things are very, very bad," she added.

Things are bad. I keep saying that. I do this on TV night after night. Wow, things are bad. Things are bad on many different fronts. In our country, things are terrible right now, about the pandemic, the economy, our political norms and the disillusionment of politeness and everything else. Things are very bad. But put yourself in the president's shoes. Now if you are the incumbent President of the United States, thinking about all the structural things that predict whether or not presidents will be re-elected. You think of the economy first, you look at the smoldering wreck of the economy. You think of that unprecedented outward appearance that has been forced upon you and that represents a pandemic. How are you going to deal with it? They manage it worse than any other developed country in the world and as a result have the largest death toll on earth. You think about it and then you think about the investigation that is following you, tracking your business, tracking your family now and you are running for reelection now and the election is really soon. Things are very, very bad. It is just bad news after bad news to be President now.
It's no surprise Trump panics
It is by no means surprising that Donald Trump and his re-election campaign are panicking.
The state of the country under Trump's leadership is dire. None of his attacks on Joe Biden continue. Its polls in many swing states are disastrous.
Worse, the country is now going through its final attempt to label the election a fraud unless the results turn out in its favor.
With 40 days to go until election day, Donald Trump appears to be circling the drain of American history as voters signal they are ready to turn the page in this dark era.
