Elliott Broidy, a formerly influential fundraiser for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, was indicted by federal authorities on Thursday for violating a foreign lobbying law.

Broidy has been tried in the US District Court in Washington, DC, on a tool known as criminal intelligence that is typically used when a defendant has agreed to plead guilty.

The indictment said Broidy agreed to lobby the Trump administration and the Justice Department to end or positively resolve an investigation into a foreigner for his role in misappropriating billions of dollars from the Malaysian government development fund known as 1MDB .

1MDB has been involved in a legal investigation for several years, investigating money laundering and other illegal activities.

Broidy and Nickie Lum Davis, another person involved in the case, have not notified the Trump administration or the Justice Department that he is acting on behalf of the foreigner, the court said Thursday.

Both Broidy and Davis, along with someone identified on the file as "Person A", attempted to arrange a meeting between Malaysia's Prime Minister and Trump in September 2017 to discuss the resolution of the 1MDB matter with "Trump" .

The document states that Broidy, Davis, and another unnamed person identified only as Person A "have been unsuccessful in their efforts to drop or otherwise resolve 1MDB matters for Foreign National A".

Broidy is accused of conspiring as the unregistered agent of a foreign client.

Broidy stepped down from his senior role as deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee in 2018 after announcing he was paying $ 1.6 million to a former Playboy model he impregnated in an affair.

In 2009, Broidy pleaded guilty to New York State Court for donating nearly $ 1 million to pension fund civil servants in exchange for Broidy's private equity firm to manage $ 250 million in pension funds got presented.

The same investigation that implicated Broidy in the case resulted in the conviction of former New York State Controller Alan Hevesi.
