During her program on Monday night, Rachel Maddow said it took Donald Trump and an complicit Republican party only four years to bring American democracy to the brink of collapse.
In the next 15 days, according to the MSNBC host, the American people will have to decide whether to keep the country in this current tendency toward authoritarianism or to return to the days when the US was a "mature" democracy.
"All it takes is a presidency like this, and now we are like all these other sad sackcloth, maybe democracies around the world who are wondering if there might be a junta this year and not feeling weird anymore, prepare for election day violence, "Maddow said.
"We have 15 days to decide if we want to change this course," she added.

All in all, this was a pretty normal day today in what was until recently the world's leading example of fully developed rule of law democracy. Now we know all it takes is a presidency like this and now we are like all these other sad sackcloth, maybe democracies around the world who are wondering whether there will be a junta this year and not getting weird anymore feels like preparing for elections -day violence. How did we get to this country so quickly? It takes a presidency, one of our two big parties that is happy to participate, less than four years in which we have not got used to what the rest of the world easily recognizes as authoritarian drift and everything that means corruption and nepotism and Rule of law. It turns out it doesn't take much. It doesn't take much. And it certainly doesn't take much time to reduce ourselves to the country in which we gave lectures on democratic norms and regular order and the impartial administration of justice, even on incitement to political violence by national officials, right? We have taught small countries around the world about this stuff. Now we are. And we have 15 days to decide if we want to change this course.
To call this choice the most important in history is an understatement
American voters are told every four years that “these” presidential elections are the most important in history. This year, that's not just true, it's an understatement.
It will be years before Donald Trump – with the help of a shameless, spineless Republican Party – wreaked havoc. This work is unlikely to be completed even after Joe Biden's four years of potential presidency.
However, if Trump gets another term in the White House, it is unclear whether the damage can even be repaired.
In the next 15 days, voters must have the opportunity to firmly reject Donald Trump and his makers if they push this country to authoritarianism.
