When the American people are distracted by Donald Trump's efforts to reverse the results of an election he critically lost to Joe Biden, Rachel Maddow alarmed how the outgoing president is undermining global security on his way to the door.
“(Trump's refusal to accept the election results) was not only a waste of time in view of the new administration's rise but also a distraction from what the Trump administration is doing on the way out the door to the country so much as confused as possible as they go, ”said Maddow.
The MSNBC host noted that Trump has now decided to step out of the Open Skies treaty, an agreement that aimed to "reduce the risk of war by allowing Russia and the West to conduct unarmed reconnaissance flights over each other's territories ".
CNN reported, "The treaty gave US allies and partners without sophisticated satellite capabilities the ability to collect and share data. All member countries could access images collected from flights."
"The Trump administration really made a decision at the moment when they announced they were stepping out of the Open Skies contract," Maddow said.
“For us and all of our allied countries in Europe who have been with us in this treaty for decades, we chose this moment today to blind them to surveillance and other information about Russia on which they have been dependent on us for this Treaty since the fall of the Soviet Union, ”she added.

The delay in adopting the presidential election results, when all this nonsense has played out, has already been detrimental to the real work that needs to be done to bring the new government up to speed, right? Prepare the country for a major change of government while the pandemic is at its peak and the economy is in disaster. I think it has been overlooked however that the length of time the president has chosen to stretch this out, defy the election results and uphold this fiction that he will somehow stay in power despite the elections, not only was it a waste of time, to defend the new government, and it was also a diversion from what the Trump administration is doing on the way to the door to mess the country as much as possible while they are leaving. For example, the Trump administration just really picked when it announced it was stepping out of the Open Skies treaty. For us and for all of our allied countries in Europe who have been with us in this treaty for decades, we have chosen this moment today to blind them to the surveillance and other information about Russia on which they have been dependent through us for this Treaty since the fall of the Soviet Union. This thing has been around since 1992. We killed it today. We go. We won't do these flights anymore. Therefore, the other contracting countries will not have access to the intelligence and surveillance data provided by these flights. You have received this data for decades. Not anymore from today.
Trump's damage will persist through January 20, 2021
While it was a positive development on Monday that the formal transition process finally began, that doesn't mean Trump can't do further harm to American interests.
As Rachel Maddow suggested Monday night, Trump will continue to cause permanent damage to the United States, both on the domestic front and on the world stage.
The transition process has officially started, but Donald Trump will spend the next two months burning the place down to impede the incoming Biden administration.
