Maxine Waters and Marjorie Taylor Greene educate a lesson on the place Kevin McCarthy attracts the road
These are the same people, CNN's Stephen Collinson points out, who rejected Donald Trump's call to his supporters on January 6th to "fight like hell" and march to the US Capitol – prompting thousands of his supporters to attack the Capitol. At the same rally Trump spoke, Rep. Mo Brooks said, "Today is the day American patriots start jotting down names and kicking their asses." Despite the violence, death and vandalism that followed, McCarthy did not censor Brooks, let alone indict Trump.
In fact, Greene herself was partially stripped of committee assignments for responding positively to social media posts calling for the assassinations of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. But calling for a protest when a murderer is acquitted because he was a police officer and his victim was black – that's a bridge too far!
While McCarthy led the attack on Waters, Greene had problems of his own. Greene came under fire after a document was reported Friday demonstrating the formation of an "America First Caucus" in the house. Lines about “mutual respect for uniquely Anglo-Saxon political traditions” and immigration led to “long-term existence America's future as a unique country with a unique culture and identity is at unnecessary risk. “You and Rep. Paul Gosar were behind the planning of the new caucus, while a handful of other Republicans in the House had expressed an interest.
It turned out that this was a bridge that even the most extreme Republicans had too far away to be public at this point. McCarthy didn't have the courage to name Greene and Gosar, but he denounced "nativistic dog whistles. "And Greene ultimately blamed the whole thing on the staff – but their rejections sounded a little hollow because they had lines like," I plan to work with my fellow congressmen on President Trump's America First agenda, but we won't allow the media or anyone else to pressure the narration. America First policies will save this country for all of us, our children, and ultimately the world. "
America first America first America first Trump first America first … but the Anglo-Saxon stuff? All employees.
And what Greene really, really wants to talk about is, of course, Maxine Waters, with whom she attacks Black Lives Matter protesters more generally. According to Greene, Waters did not call for a civil rights protest, she gave "Orders to their BLM terrorists. “This in turn from someone who described January 6th as a" 1776 moment ".
The use of attacks on black democrats and racial justice activists to advance a racist agenda is clearly evident. Greene uses Waters to try to distract from her own moment of ill-advised, overt racism, but she is not alone in using Waters to advance the broader Republican agenda of targeting white voters through racialization. As the Republican leader of the House, McCarthy is right there with her, calling for the kind of action against Waters that he declined on behalf of his own members – Greene most notably – for inciting and making political violence and molesting mass shootings survivors racist appeals to advance the interests of the republican partisans. At some point you have to come to the conclusion that this is really who they are.
