In 5-4 votes, the Supreme Court refuses to block Texas’s six-week abortion ban

Protesters march down Lavaca Street during a protest outside the state of Texas capital on May 29, 2021 in Austin, Texas.

In a 5-4 vote announced at midnight Eastern Time Wednesday night, the Supreme Court refused to stop a Texas law banning abortions after six weeks, a point at which most women are still unaware you are pregnant. Chief Justice John Roberts joined the three Liberal judges in blocking the law while litigation is being challenged in the lower courts, while the Conservative majority declined in a brief unsigned statement.

The law had already gone into effect early Wednesday morning when the court denied a decision on a request for suspension. As a result, clinics in Texas have canceled most appointments, making abortion virtually impossible in the state.
