Dr. Fauci warns of a new COVID variant

As Americans continue to live with COVID-19 and the Delta variant, which brought a second wave of the virus to many parts of the United States, Dr. Anthony Fauci in front of another variant, the Mu variant.

While Fauci says US health officials are taking the new variety "very seriously," the new strain is nowhere near the dominant one.

Fauci described the Mu variant as mutations that suggest that "it would evade certain antibodies," such as those found in vaccines.

The WHO has included the coronavirus variant "Mu" in its list of "interesting variants" because it has the potential to bypass immunity to vaccines and antibodies.

The variant was first identified in Colombia in January and now accounts for 39% of all cases there

The new normal

On Thursday, Dr. Fauci predicted that Americans vaccinated with the two-dose vaccines Pfizer and Moderna would need a third booster dose.

Fauci cited data from Israel showing immunity to COVID-19 decreased about eight months after receiving the first vaccine.

When Israelis started seeing the Delta variant in early summer, infections rose among those vaccinated, but most of the population had been vaccinated.

Fauci said Israeli studies showed that infection rates were down about 84% compared to two-shot vaccination. Fauci called the protection against the virus "dramatic and permanent".

Israel, the new model?

In Israel, the time between booster injections appears to be measured in months. In order for Israelis to be able to visit bars and restaurants, they must have a vaccination card that is no older than six months from the time of the second vaccination.

If you receive a booster vaccination within five months of the second dose, the vaccination certificate will be extended by six months. Even Israeli children are not exempt from having to prove their health.

Children under the age of three who are not eligible for the vaccine will need to prove their status with a COVID-19 antigen test. This order comes from the instructions of the Israeli Ministry of Health.

"The new WHO report, released Tuesday, found that Mu has" a constellation "of mutations that could allow him to escape immune responses developed by vaccines or past COVID infections. What a poetic way of describing chaos. ”Https: // t.co/fQw2frLJPu

What's next?

The Mu variant would be the fifth known variant of COVID-19. Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta are the other well-known variants.

The World Health Organization has all but requested that the US share doses of the vaccines with developing countries, while the Biden administration is reportedly working on a booster plan.

Earlier this week, two Food & Drug Administration regulators resigned out of frustration over the booster plan because of "anger over the Biden government's plan to introduce COVID-19 booster syringes before officials had a chance to approve them ".
